Commercial fire safety

4/29/2021 (Permalink)

If you are looking to purchase a commercial building, there are a few fire safety items to be aware of. When considering a new location for your business, be sure to pay close attention to the following fire safety requirements.

Exit Signs: Exit signs and emergency backup lighting is required for all exits in a building, should occupants need to safely exit during an emergency situation. Confirm the placement and workings of all exit signage and lighting in any building.

Hazardous Occupancies: Businesses that use paint booths, glass blowing equipment, and certain types of machines could cause a fire to develop rapidly due to the high rates of heat release from this type of equipment. Having these types of contents require special approval due to their potentially hazardous nature.

Fire Extinguishers: Fire extinguisher requirements can vary depending on the occupancy classification of a building, such as light hazard, ordinary hazard, or extra hazard. Typically one fire extinguisher is required per 3,000 square feet, or one placed every 75 feet.

Occupancy Ratings: The occupancy rating of a building determines how it can be used, whether that be for office space, a restaurant, retail, etc. An occupancy rating also specifies the number of occupants a building can have in it at a given time, the type of fire protection system required, various exiting requirements, among others.

Commercial water damage

4/29/2021 (Permalink)

Commercial water damage restoration is often more complex than residential water damage restoration and usually requires an intensive approach.  The size and structure of commercial buildings, the extent of damage, the varying uses of space, and the number of occupants all affect the restoration process.  Some common cause of commercial water damage are:

  • Damaged windows
  • Damaged pipes
  • Building foundation
  • Roof leaks
  • HVAC problems
  • Sewer clogs
  • Sprinkler system leaks

Taking the necessary measures to prevent water damage can save you from costly repairs and business interruption in the future.  We would recommend:

  • Schedule regular building inspections to prevent leaks and other related issues
  • Create a flood monitoring system to protect yourself from plumbing failures and melting snow
  • Invest in facility maintenance

Why choose SERVPRO for mold issues in your home or business

4/28/2021 (Permalink)

Do you have mold issues in your home or business? SERVPRO of Bloomfield can help!

When mold has a food source, it can spread throughout an entire home in as little as 48 hours. Typically come spring and summer, homeowners discover mold due to a water intrusion of any size that came during the winter season.

Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, both indoors and outdoors, and is identifiable by a strong musty odor.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float in the air, and can enter your home through windows, doors, heating and cooling systems, or on your clothing.
  • Mold thrives on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water, and it is these colonies of mold that produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, the source of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold will return.
  • Indoor humidity needs to be below 45%, as a higher than normal indoor humidity will support the growth of mold.

Should you come across any mold issues, SERVPRO can be of service to inspect and assess your property and remediate the problem.

Cleaning vs disinfection

4/28/2021 (Permalink)

Understanding the importance and difference between cleaning and disinfecting is the first step in staying healthy and fighting COVID-19.  According to the CDC, cleaning means removing germs, dirt, and impurities from the surfaces using soap and water.  Cleaning does not kill germs but reduces the number of germs that live on a surface.  When to comes to making a surface germ-free, cleaning followed by disinfecting is the suggested method.  First, you clean to remove the dirt and germs.  Then, you use the disinfecting chemicals to kill the remaining germs on the surface.  The CDC recommends that you clean and disinfect household surfaces on a regular basis to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other germs.  Call SERVPRO of Bloomfield for any cleaning needs at your business or residence at 248-344-0044
