Did you know that if a fire starts in your home, you may have just two minutes to escape?

The most effective way to protect yourself and your home from fire is to identify and remove fire hazards. 60 percent of house fire deaths occur in homes with no working smoke alarms. During a home fire, working smoke alarms and a fire escape plan that has been practiced regularly can save lives.

Fire Safety Tips

  • Test smoke alarms once a month, if they’re not working, change the batteries.
  • If a fire occurs in your home, GET OUT, STAY OUT and CALL for help.
  • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas.

Best Tips for Raking Leaves

8/23/2018 (Permalink)

When you have a day to rake your leaves try to do it when there's no wind to interfere with your work. If you have only one day of the week to rake and it happens to be windy, rake your leaves in the same direction that the wind is blowing. If you Rake the leaves into the wind it will only blow them around.

Clear your pathways and high-traffic areas of leaves on an ongoing basis. Don't even bother raking your entire yard until all the leaves have fallen. It may bother you to see the leaves pile up, but you should still wait until the branches are bare.  This will save you from hours of work.

Your rusty metal fan rake may seem like an old friend, but its useful days are over. There are new raking tools out there like the Lee Valley Power Rake which will save you a lot of time on yard work. You may want to consider other raking alternatives, such as a push-power leaf collector to help reduce your backaches.

Speaking of backaches, make sure you practice proper raking techniques before, during, and after your work.  Raking is considered as a real workout, so you need to stretch in order for your body to warm up before you start.

This is the key to efficient raking. Rake your leaves into small piles on top of a tarp or a piece of plastic, then drag that pile to your main pile or compost. Raking all the leaves into one big pile takes extra time and energy plus you still have to move it to another location.

This one is simple but important. Wet leaves are heavier than dry ones, so try to do your raking during a dry stretch of weather. This will not only save you time and energy, but also prevent you from handling a bunch of slimy, wet leaves.

This is kind of like cheating but is ultimately an effective way to clean up your leaves by turning them into mulch that's bagged by the mower. If you don't like the smell, sound, or environmental impact of gas mowers, there are some great electric mowers out there that have mulching capability.

Do you have a Fire Escape Plan?

8/23/2018 (Permalink)

Making a Plan

  • Ensure that all household members know two ways to escape from every room of your home
  • Make sure everyone knows where to meet outside in case of fire
  • Practice escaping from your home at least twice a year and at different times of the day.
  • Make sure everyone knows how to call 911
  • Teach household members to STOP, DROP, and ROLL if their clothes should catch on fire.

Follow Your Escape Plan

During a home fire, remember to GET OUT, STAY OUT and call 911 or your local emergency phone number.

  • If closed doors or handles are warm, use your second way out. Never open doors that are warm to the touch
  • Crawl low under smoke
  • Go to your outside meeting place and then for help
  • If smoke, heat or flames block your exit routes, stay in the room with doors closed. Place a wet towel under the door and call the fire department or 911. Open a window and wave a brightly colored cloth or flashlight to signal for help.

Practicing and following the steps to your fire escape plan can save your life!

Can Mold be Completely Removed?

8/23/2018 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, including indoors and outdoors. With that being said, this makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level.  Some restoration business will still advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is false. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and can enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems.  They can even travel indoors on your clothing or on a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture and can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Storm Damage Emergency Tips

8/16/2018 (Permalink)

Attentiveness is key when it comes to preventing mold growth. SERVPRO, a professional mold remediation company, can address mold issues in businesses. If mold growth is noticed, SERVPRO should be called immediately to minimize any damage and stop the mold from spreading.

One way to prevent commercial mold from growing is to increase the heat. When the walls on a commercial property are too cold, moisture particles in the air condensate, creating a damp film that leads to the formation of mold. In the summer, make sure to keep the thermostat on a low heat setting, and insulate the walls on the property.

In addition, another way to keep commercial damage from mold at bay is to maximize the air flow in the space. This can be done by opening windows and allowing cold air to circulate inside the property. Open windows keep surfaces dry and push mold spores outside. To further increase the air flow, pull furniture away from walls.

Overall, SERVPRO recommends that business owners fix any leaks from dripping pipes and water overflows, keep the roof in good repair (especially if it is flat), and make sure to throw away mold damaged items, such as books and rotting food.

Whatever your mold remediation needs are, SERVPRO of Bloomfield is here to help at 248-344-0044.

Is Your Home Prepared for Storm Damage?

8/16/2018 (Permalink)

Summer is that time of year when tornadoes and severe storms are more likely to occur. Many people don’t have a plan in place for severe weather. With some planning, your family can have an increased chance of staying safe during an unexpected storm.

Although creating a plan is important, practicing it is even more crucial. A severe weather plan needs to be practiced so that everyone knows where to go, no matter what time of day or night severe weather strikes. Write down all of the important phone numbers for family and friends so that you can stay in contact with them after the storm to ensure that they are safe. Another important number to have is that of your insurance adjustor. This number is beneficial if there is damage to the home. Companies like SERVPRO of Bloomfield can come to the home to help with water removal and other storm damage that occurs inside of the house.

Keep copies of all of your important documents, such as social security cards and birth certificates. You also need to have a way to communicate with others in the event there is no power or phone service.

An emergency preparedness kit is something to have so that your family can survive if there is no power or if the family is stuck in the home due to damages from the storm. Items in the kit should last for about 72 hours. Batteries are essential so that you can use your phone, radio or a battery powered television. You also need flashlights, a gallon of water for each person for at least 3 days, and non-perishable foods. Other items you might want to include in your kit are blankets, first aid supplies, and clothing.

Before a storm arrives, if possible, secure items that might blow away. These include chairs and toys that are in the yard. When you are prepared for a natural disaster and the storm damage that could occur, it can help give your family a peace of mind so that they can focus on remaining safe and together.

Get Prepared: Emergency Supply Kit

8/16/2018 (Permalink)

Summer is the time to prepare for whatever Mother Nature decides to throw our way. Having an emergency supply kit on hand is the first place to start.

An emergency supply kit is a collection of basic items in your household you may need in the event of an emergency.

Try to assemble your kit well in advance of an emergency. You may have to evacuate at a moments notice and take essentials with you. You will probably not have the time to search for the supplies you need or shop for them when disaster strikes.

You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water, and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last at least 72 hours.

Recommended Items to Include in an Emergency Supply Kit:

  • Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least 3 days.
  • Food, at least a 3 day supply of non-perishable items.
  • Battery powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA weather radio with tone alert and extra batteries.
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask to filter contaminated air.
  • Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter in place.
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation.
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities.
  • Can opener for food.
  • Local maps.
  • Phone chargers with adapters to allow charging in a car.
