Commercial fire safety

If you are looking to purchase a commercial building, there are a few fire safety items to be aware of. When considering a new location for your business, be sure to pay close attention to the following fire safety requirements.

Exit Signs: Exit signs and emergency backup lighting is required for all exits in a building, should occupants need to safely exit during an emergency situation. Confirm the placement and workings of all exit signage and lighting in any building.

Hazardous Occupancies: Businesses that use paint booths, glass blowing equipment, and certain types of machines could cause a fire to develop rapidly due to the high rates of heat release from this type of equipment. Having these types of contents require special approval due to their potentially hazardous nature.

Fire Extinguishers: Fire extinguisher requirements can vary depending on the occupancy classification of a building, such as light hazard, ordinary hazard, or extra hazard. Typically one fire extinguisher is required per 3,000 square feet, or one placed every 75 feet.

Occupancy Ratings: The occupancy rating of a building determines how it can be used, whether that be for office space, a restaurant, retail, etc. An occupancy rating also specifies the number of occupants a building can have in it at a given time, the type of fire protection system required, various exiting requirements, among others.
